National Commission for Women (NCW)  Capacity Building & Personality Development Programme for UG & PG Female Students” in JNRM

Port Blair, May 08: The Department of Home Science, JNRM, in association with the National Commission for Women, Govt. of India organized a Capacity Building & Personality Development Programme for UG & PG Female Students on 08th May 2023 in the Lecture Gallery.

            During the inauguration the Chief Guest Ms. Pallavi Sarkar, IAS, Secretary (Social Welfare) Andaman and Nicobar Administration congratulated the Department of Home Science for organising this programme which is the need of the hour. The women in the society are marginalized and the government is taking all possible steps to bring them into the mainstream. The Professional Career Skills is required for identifying career opportunities, building resume and presentation skills. Ms. Pallavi Sarkar said while preparing for a career one should exercise SWOT analysis for knowing the innate strengths and weaknesses. This analysis will help the girl students in preparing an appropriate career and  fill the  gaps for facing interviews. The management of resource, obtaining practical knowledge will pave the way for overall development. Under personality development the individual’s habits lead to character and personality, so the students should know their habits which are good for self and society, she added. 

Mrs. Pearl Devdas, Principal JNRM spoke on the relevance of the programme in today’s scenario. She has also emphasised the need for women empowerment through career development.  The objective of the programme is to make women learners engage in effective communication by respecting diversity and embracing good listening skills, she added. Mrs. Pearl Devdas further said that the students can learn effective time management skills thereby avoiding unwarranted stress.

            Dr. K.Venkatesan, HOD, Homescience and Convener of the programme spoke on the  role of NCW in organising a country-wide capacity building and personality development program for women Undergraduate and Postgraduate students. The Commission is collaborating with Central and State universities for organizing sessions on Personal Capacity Building, Professional Career Skills and Digital Literacy and Effective Use of Social Media to prepare women students for entering the job market, he added. 

            During the technical Session Mr. B.Senthil Kumar, IDAS, Additional Controller of Defense Accounts, Area Account Office, Ministry of Defense, Govt of India, spoke on Professional and Career Skills: How  to prepare various competitive examinations especially civil service examination, CDR Preeti Yadav, Commander (Retd), Indian Navy spoke on Career Opportunities in various military and paramilitary forces, Effective Resume Writing and Presentation Skill. Dr. RVR. Murthy, Regional Director, IGNOU-Regional Centre, Port Blair spoke on Soft Skill and Career Development. Dr.N.C.Vinod, Assistant Professor & Head, Department of Computer Science spoke on Digital Literacy and Cyber Crime Prevention including effective use of Social Media. Banking Services and Payment Gateways, Dr. K.Venkatesan, HOD, Homescience spoke on Personal and Capacity Building: Listening and Brainstorming, Time Management and Stress Management. Mr. Manoj, Dy Commandant, CISF, Port Unit of Port Blair also spoke on the career prospects for women in CAPF with special reference to CISF & CRPF. 

            Earlier Mrs. Nidhi Shekhawat, Assistant Professor welcomed the gathering while Ms. P.Bhuvaneshwari, Resource Person, and Department of Home Science proposed vote of thanks. Mrs. Poonam Ajay Singh, Resource Person, Department of Home Science moderated the entire programme and Dr. Shilpa Kaushal, Resource Person was served as Rapporteur. Altogether 300 Girl students from various departments of JNRM participated in this programme.

            After completion of all the three sessions, students took an online quiz organized through MyGov where they will be tested for their understanding of the subject. The test will be based on the booklet/ training sessions conducted under the program. All the participants will receive certificates upon completion of the quiz and the top 25 participants will be provided with ‘Certificate of Commendation’ signed by NCW, MyGov and the Head of the Institute.
