ICAR-CIARI Conducts Awareness Program on Responsible Fishing Practices & Distribution of Input Materials at Car Nicobar

Port Blair, Apr 20: Under the theme “Tribal Empowerment” of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM)” ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI), Port Blair in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Car Nicobar conducted an awareness program on responsible fishing practices and input distribution program on 13.04.2023 under the Scheduled Tribe Component (STC) at the office of the Tribal Council, Big Lapathy, Car Nicobar. 

Fishing nets (34 Nos.) were distributed as input to 40 tribal people by the Chief Guest, Mr. Lionald Nicomed, Chief Captain, Tribal Council, Car Nicobar. During the inaugural address, Mr. Lionald Nicomed appreciated the efforts of ICAR-CIARI and KVK towards upgrading the fisheries-based infrastructure and support services for the tribal fishermen in Car Nicobar. He also assured that the inputs would be used in a proper manner for improving marine fishing activities. Dr. R Kiruba Sankar, Senior Scientist, ICAR-CIARI outlined the importance of responsible fishing practices for harnessing long-term benefits in the marine fisheries sector of Car Nicobar Island. 

The program was conducted under the plan and guidance of Dr. Eaknath B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR-CIARI along with the team comprising Dr. K. Saravanan, Dr. J. Praveenraj, Dr. R. Kiruba Sankar, Dr. S.K Zamir Ahmed, and Mr. Mohamed Sarief.
